THE ECLIPSE HAPPENED WHILE I DREAMED...

Never saw it. Only heard everybody talking about it online. Sylvia Plath famously wished for silence and blackness. One dude told me it was totally dark for 15 minutes. That's all I have to go by...

Spent the day at the library. Returned and found several books I wish I had the courage to check out: A Patti Smith Photo Tribute, A Summer of Love Anthology, and  a recent tribute to The Doors. But I owe too many fines as it is, so I will imagine if you can.

It was a good day. Hope it was the same for you. Wishing you much peace and love (and light) :-)

P.S. This will be my last blog post for some time to come. The trolls are becoming tedious at best.  And I have a life to live as best I can.

Jon, Helga, Roy, The Bald Vegan, Geo - I remain grateful for your friendship and support. And I hope life treats you kind...

TRUE CAT STORY

While I was staggering home from a bar in 1986, I suddenly heard the distinct sound of a cat meowing in distress. I stopped in my tracks, and discovered a cat in a posh carrier dropped off outside an animal shelter at 2 A.M.

I  opened the carrier (this was during one of the coldest winters in Chicago), and did my best to comfort the cat as best I could. I reasoned she would freeze to death before the shelter opened in the morning, so I put the shivering cat back in the carrier, and hopped on a warm bus to my apartment.

Long story short: I named her Venus, and she became my constant companion for many wonderful months. Sadly, my lover and I finally got our subsidized apartment, and no pets were allowed. I was forced to find a good home for Venus.

A "friend" offered to give her a good home, so I trusted him. He buttered me up by telling me I would still be able to visit Venus, and he would give her the good care she deserved.

Here's the dark part. A mere week after I trusted him with Venus, he claimed that he'd given her to a lonely old lady as a companion. Whenever I asked if I might be able to see Venus for a visit, he always had some lame excuse.

I finally confronted him about the matter, and he fessed up that he'd tossed Venus out of the house because he was afraid he might hurt her. He threw her in the alley (and she was declawed) during a severe snow storm. I still have nightmares about this. And I learned that most "friends" are frauds at best.

This nutcase now calls himself a vegan. I hope that karma will teach him a lesson or two. Big Time.

ONE COOL CAT: A STREET CAT NAMED BOB

I only just discovered this fantastic book a little more than 4 weeks ago. If you are a lover of pets and how they can keep us going when humans fall short of  giving us the unconditional love and support that we all need to keep on going, then give this book a very long peek.

James Bowen was a recovering drug addict in London in 2007 when he first met Bob. Poor Bob had a serious paw injury, and could scarcely walk. After James noticed that nobody was offering any help he took matters into his own hands and made sure Bob got a proper visit and treatment to a vet, and Bob was on the mend within 2 weeks.

The rest is history. James is clean and sober, and Bob is a national celebrity. Several best-selling books, a popular movie about their special bond which was released in 2016, plus several charity foundations for homeless people and stray cats and dogs.

And all because one wounded cat and a damaged human saw themselves in each other. I can't wait to see the movie! (Most public libraries have all the books and DVD.)

"I saved Bob and he saved me. He's a special little fellow." - James Bowen
